With instrumental contributions from Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Stick Men), Jon Poole (Cardiacs, Lifesigns, Dowling Poole) Markus Reuter (Stick Men) and Adrian Benavidès (Earthdiver), “I Succumb” is a song of despair to the life of the average Westerner.

Enslaved by normality; condemned to capitulate to the injunction of love. Mind and body torn between the desires of individuality and undifferentiation.

LYRICS: I’m going through the day, the day sucks my life away, no worry, I’ve had my dose of booze so when I walk I just don’t have to choose, I go direct, I go straight, I buy and understand so easily what has to be understood, freaky news, frightening news, the signs and warnings drive me all the way across the day, it’s all about a brave new world, consuming, and living with the other girls and boys, experiencing social entertaining, inter-whining and complaining about what the signs tell us to complain about: “Is the climate going to recover ever? Is the fascism going to come back? What are they wanting to tell us?” “Why do they take decisions for us? Is the climate going to recover ever? Is the vaccine going to work?” I think it’s good, I’m confused, I don’t know really, but it must be good somehow, because my belly’s half-full, I’m not so hungry, and I’m happy, I don’t complain, I should complain, about what? And… How come anger and frustration are leading us? And… We don’t want a leader, the leaders are all corrupt. Is the climate ever gonna change? I don’t know. What can I do? What shall I do? I’m just a selfish prick, I should better go back to my car and stop and start, safe in the house, question the smart phone, mirror, mirror, switch on the drone, so when the night comes… I succumb, I return to the womb, obey the order to love from the flat above. “Is the climate going to recover, ever?” What is happening to my hands and to my other extremities, they’re too far, they’re too far, they’re just moving autonomously, I don’t think I am so much of an autonomous person, it’s all unreal, so when the night comes, I think of the leisure, the job is done, the leisure is not done, I have to do the leisure so I go to the disco, and I dance, I dance to you, I go to meet, I go to meet. Meet is good. I succumb, I return to the womb, obey the order to love from the flat above. “Is the climate going to recover?” I succumb, I return to the womb, obey the order to love from the flat above. “Is the climate going to recover, ever?” I believe I think I think I believe, I think Is the climate ever going to change? Must be another system, whatever, you name it, you name it, another country, another place, another climate, where I can do the same tasks but using biodegradable masks. Am I right? Am I wrong? Maybe it’s the world just driving us crazy, but this madness is good for us, if it lets me enjoy, enjoy myself being crazy, I love to be crazy and forget about where we could be and what we could do, all the breathing process, and what we could change, get stung, don’t get stung, what we could do, get stung, don’t get stung. Is anything going to change, ever?

LYRICS: Love of a dog He’d lick my wounds, I’d hug him tight I’d stroke him too, he’d never bite Love of a dog Never repress any caress He’d calm me down, relieve the stress Love of a dog He’d always help me to overcome When humdrum takes me down Love of a dog He’d never question my choices And run to the sound of my voice Love of a dog He’d always help me to overcome When humdrum takes me down Love of a dog He’d accept all my chromosomes, My curtain calls, my Instagrams Love of a dog Can’t last too long Gog and Magog Bonds are far too strong Like a high noon A dog’s life ends too soon Love of a dog He’d always look me in the eyes He’d always be up for a fight He’d never care Of what I wear or how’s my hair He’s just happy with my sweater Love of a dog Resentment lasts not very long Instead he will protect me always Never take me for anyone else Never take me for anyone Sweet dog, sweet dog.

about

The single announces Unquiet Music Ltd second official album “Meme/Music” on CD and download (48 kHz 24 bits). The album is composed by JP Rossi, and produced by Markus Reuter (Stick Men, Reuter/Motzer/Grohowski, Anchor & Burden), crossing multiple boundaries between the electronic and the acoustic, between complexity and simplicity, between deep contemporary classical structures and textures and punchy art rock drive.

“A song of despair to the westerner’s life enslaved by normality and condemned to succumb to the injunction of love. A mind and body torn between the desires of individuality and indifferentiation”

“Bass beats and electronic noises of the multigrid dimensions of the city and the network clashing in a routine of pressure. Hammering guitars and gut-wrenching solos surround a couple of heartbreaking melodic choruses.”

Unquiet Music Ltd’s 2020 debut album, “In the Name of... (A Prayer for our Times)”, was an arresting and hypnotic mix of contemporary classical structures, urgent solo and choral voices, and electric art-rock sonority. An abstracted electronic Mass, it merged Messaien-ic detail and depth with needle-like mechanistic precision and a hallucinatory atmosphere.

Two years on, “I Succumb” illustrates the next step for Unquiet Music Ltd: avant-garde pop reflections on human connection and communication, more song-based and lyrical.

The single builds on classic yet still fresh starting points (the eerie human-vs-technology accents of Berlin-era David Bowie; the twitchy psychology of Ray Davies; the flaring relentlessness of King Crimson and the industrial chants of Laibach) while retaining the teeming post-classical sophistication of previous Unquiet Music Ltd work. Packed with contemporary neuroses and dread, it sits in an uneasy bed of bass beats and electronic noises (representing the multi-levelled grid-and-network dimensions of urban living, clashing in an inhuman routine of pressure) while hammering guitars and gut-wrenching solos surround heartbreaking melodic choruses.

In complete contrast, companion track “Love Of A Dog” is a different kind of vulnerable. Absolutely exposed, unafraid of sentiment, and peculiar (in a good way), it’s a childlike tribute to animal friendship webbed up in organ, unexpected choir and Jon Poole’s tender fretless bass. Another reflection on connection, another example of the shifting Unquiet Music Ltd perspective.
